An Elevated Dog Bowl Could Be A Good Choice For Your Dog

November 8th, 2009 · No Comments

An elevated double dog bowl for your dog may be just the answer when it comes to getting it to eat more healthily. Additionally, these devices can provide an easier and more digestively-efficient way for the dog to eat and drink. Studies show that having your pet eat from bowls that are on a higher level helps to lessen the chances of it contracting a condition called bloat. This can be a very serious problem in dogs and is the second leading cause of death in them, after cancer.

The typical elevated double dog bowl have their bowl or bowls raised to a height of about ten inches above the ground. Good ones will provide their bowls in stainless steel or ceramic materials, also. Plastic isn’t a recommended material to use, when it comes to a dog eating or drinking from a bowl, according to most veterinarians. This is because plastic gouges or scratches too easily, and bacteria can hide in those gouges. This isn’t the case with steel or ceramic bowls.

Some of these elevated double dog bowl are also height-adjustable. The good units are sturdily-built and will have non-skid bottoms on their legs to prevent the station from being pushed around when the dog feeds. The bowls will come in sizes ranging from one pint all the way up to three quarts.

Bigger or larger dogs – those of fifty or more pounds in weight or nineteen or more inches in height at the shoulder bones area – can benefit from having their own feeding stations. Ones for these sizes of dogs usually run about sixteen inches tall. They’re also constructed with the large dog’s unique ergonomic requirements in mind, which small dogs don’t have.

Tall or elevated feeders can also reduced dogs’ bone, joint, or musculo-skeletal stress through enabling better posture when eating. The cumulative effects of a lifetime of hours spent hunched over eating can combine to impact any dog regardless of outward health. There’s also an elevated feeding station for your small dog or other pet, such as a cat. They, too, can provide a healthy and comfortable feeding position for your animal.

Some of these units also provide a gravity feed system for watering that your pet will be sure to enjoy. An upside down bottle is screwed into a built-in hole, which then lets water flow down into its water bowl as levels in the bowl are reduced through the pet’s drinking activities. This ensures the water in the bowl is always fresh and pure. It’s also the case that many of these feeders come in portable or right-size models, perfect for when you and your pet travel.

And just because your pet isn’t human (at least biologically), that doesn’t mean it has to put up with drab or boring design and style in a feeding unit. They come in a variety styles and materials, from ornate wrought iron all the way over to sleek, futuristic Danish Modern and everything in between. This is more for our esthetic benefit than for the dog’s own benefit, of course, but it’s always nice to have functional, stylish household pet accessories whenever possible.

Truthfully, an elevated feeding station might just be the perfect addition to your dog’s environment. That way, it can have its food and water in a safe, healthful manner each and every single feeding session. And try to always use bowls made of ceramic or stainless steel, if you can. And a self-watering model should also be a consideration when it comes to providing the best for your beloved pet.
