The sharp teeth of a puppy can cause you quite a bit of pain. It is crucial that we nip this habit of biting in the bud. In order to stop puppy biting different methods may have to be tried. Any bad habits must not be rewarded. If you want your pup to mature into that wonderful family pet, you will need to take responsibility for helping him. Dog behavior is never “good” or “bad” it’s just behavior. It is going to take some time, but stopping a puppies bad habits needs to be done.
The playing behavior for a litter of puppies involves lots of nipping and biting. It is probably the first problem every new owner will have to overcome because it is so common for puppies to nip and bite. All new puppies take part in this behavior, but as a new member of your family actions will need to be taken to control it.
When your pup bites you, quickly give him a sharp tap on the nose and say “NO”. The habit of biting will only be encouraged if the tap on the nose is done to softly. A timid correction is a worthless correction. One good tap on the muzzle, that gets the puppies attention could stop puppy biting. Here is another method, the next time he bites, quickly grab him by his nose and look him in the eye and boldly say “NO” and this should give him the idea that biting is wrong. Some pups catch on pretty fast and some of them, well you will just have to be patient. Once your little bundle of joy understands what is going on, when you say “NO” he should stop. The word NO will be a verbal command that comes in rather nicely when he starts testing his teeth on the furniture or anything that happens to be laying in your closet.
Another method to prevent your pup from destroying your personal items and nipping you is chew toys. When the teething stage hits he is going to need something to chew and bite on so the chew toys get to serve another purpose. Choose the right kind of toys that can hang in there for a long time under the intense gnawing pressure of your puppies sharp little teeth. Do not get toys that are to small because they can get stuck in the puppies throat.
While playing with your puppy, don’t encourage him to bite and play rough or it may become a bigger challenge to stop puppy biting, it’s best to avoid any bad behavior traits at this stage. What ever method you choose to fix the problem, remember, it is going to take some time. All puppies are going to go through the biting stage. Remember to just stay firm and show a lot of patience and this stage in your puppies life will be history.
